How To Colour with Watercolor Pencils: Blender Pens verses Water Painters

By | 11 July 2024

Today I am sharing how to colour with Watercolor Pencils. I have used two different ways to colour with the pencils.

The important thing to remember when you colour with Watercolor Pencils is to use StazOn ink so the ink doesn’t run, bleed, or blend into the colouring. StazOn is a permanent ink, so after you have used your stamp, you will need to clean it off with StazOn Cleaner.

Here are the two ways to colour with Watercolor Pencils:

  1. Blender Pens: After stamping the image with StazOn ink, colour the image with Watercolor Pencils. Then use the Blender Pens to blend the ink, removing the pencil lines and softening the look. Just wipe the tip of the pen on a scrap piece of paper to remove any colour before switching to a different colour.
  2. Water Painters: Since you are using water for this technique, it is best to stamp your image onto Fluid 100 Watercolor Paper. Once again, stamp the image with StazOn ink. Color the image with the Watercolor Pencils, then use the smallest tip Water Painter to blend the colour from the pencil, gently mixing it with water.

To finish the cards, I stamped a sentiment using Memento ink. You don’t need to use StazOn here as we are not colouring it in anyway. If the sentiment doesn’t stamp straight or look good, you can stamp it on a scrap strip of Basic White cardstock, trim the edges, and adhere it to the card with Stampin’ Dimensionals. I then added some black Baker’s Twine before adhering the card to the Basic Black matting. It was then adhered to a Thick Basic White card base. Lastly, to give it some sparkle, I added three Rhinestones.

I shared how to make these cards on my Live this week. You can check out the video below.

Have you used Watercolor Pencils before? If so, do you prefer to colour them with Blender Pens or Water Painters? I like both methods, but I prefer using Blender Pens.

Here is a list of the materials I used to make these cards. If you would like to purchase any of the products, you can order through my online store or contact me, and I can help you with your order.

I hope you are inspired by how easy it is to colour with Watercolor Pencils and that you may give it a go!
