Have you ever looked at a card kit and wondered whether you should follow the instructions exactly or add your own creative touch?
In my Facebook and YouTube Live on 21st May, I shared the May Sparkling Celebrations Paper Pumpkin Kit and showed how you can enjoy it either way. The kit was designed to create nine celebration-themed cards featuring fireworks, lanterns, and festive imagery, but I also demonstrated a few alternative card ideas using the contents of the kit and a handful of extra supplies.

While the Sparkling Celebrations kit is no longer available, it perfectly demonstrates why I enjoy Paper Pumpkin. Whether you’re a beginner or a more experienced crafter, these kits make it easy to create beautiful handmade cards while still leaving room for your own creativity.
Why I Enjoy Paper Pumpkin
One of the things I appreciate about Paper Pumpkin is how approachable it is.
Each month, a coordinated box arrives with almost everything you need to complete the projects. Depending on the kit, you’ll typically receive:
- Pre-cut card bases and envelopes
- An exclusive stamp set
- A coordinating ink spot
- Adhesives and embellishments
- Step-by-step instructions
The projects are designed to be achievable and enjoyable, making them ideal for beginners, busy crafters, or anyone who would like a creative project ready to go.
You can simply follow the instructions and enjoy the satisfaction of creating finished cards, or you can use the kit as a starting point for your own ideas. That flexibility is one of the reasons I think Paper Pumpkin appeals to so many different types of crafters.
Making the Sparkling Celebrations Kit Your Own
During my live, I first showed the original kit designs and then shared several alternative projects.

The fireworks elements from the kit were perfect for creating a colourful easel card with a “Time to Celebrate” sentiment. By adding a little extra cardstock and changing the card fold, the kit took on a completely different look while still using the same beautiful die-cut pieces.

I also transformed the window card into a scenic “Thinking of You” card by placing a sunset scene behind the die-cut window. The paper was from the Scenic Coast Designer Series Paper. This simple change created the feeling of looking out over the water at sailboats on the horizon. The boat stamps are from the Sunset Coast stamp set.

Another variation used the lantern elements to create a gatefold card featuring glowing lights against an evening sky.

What I love about these alternatives is that they don’t require lots of extra products. Often, a different card fold, some extra cardstock, or a sentiment from your collection is all you need to create something unique.
The original projects are lovely as they are, but it can be fun to see how far a kit can stretch when you start experimenting.
You can also watch the replay of the Facebook and YouTube Live to see the Sparkling Celebrations kit, the original projects, and the alternative card ideas in more detail.
Perfect for Building Confidence
Many people tell me they would like to make cards but aren’t sure where to start.
Paper Pumpkin removes much of the guesswork. The colours coordinate, the pieces are prepared for you, and the instructions guide you through the process. You can enjoy creating without needing a large craft room or a huge collection of supplies.
Once you’ve made the projects as designed, you may find yourself becoming more confident and ready to try your own variations.
That confidence is one of the reasons I enjoy sharing these kits. They help people experience success, learn new ideas, and discover that creativity doesn’t have to be complicated.
