If you enjoy learning new techniques that look impressive but don’t take a lot of time, the debossed ink resist background technique is one to try. It’s a simple way to add depth and interest to your cards using just a few basic tools—and the results can really elevate your design without much extra effort.

In my Facebook and YouTube Live on 17th April 2025, I shared how to use this technique to highlight one of my favourite stamp sets—Layering Leaves, along with its coordinating Bough Punch and the Fern 3D Embossing Folder. All three are part of the Last Chance Promotions, so if you’ve had your eye on any of them, now’s the time to act before they retire!
You can watch the full video tutorial below and find a list of supplies at the end of this post.
A Simple Technique with Striking Results
The magic of this technique lies in its layered steps: ink blending, embossing (using the debossed side), and then gently swiping an ink pad with a darker colour over the surface to reveal the texture. The result is a beautiful resist effect that really makes your embossing folder shine—perfect for cards where you want the background to do a lot of the work.
I used a soft natural colour palette of Granny Apple Green, Garden Green, and Pecan Pie, but this technique works just as beautifully in cooler tones like Fresh Freesia and Balmy Blue. It’s ideal if you like experimenting with colour combinations or have ink pads you’re wanting to get more use from.
Featuring Last Chance Favourites
During the live, I used a few products that are part of the current Last Chance list, and some are even discounted right now:
- Layering Leaves stamp set – A versatile set with both foliage and sentiments.
- Bough Punch – Great for quick embellishing with coordinating leaf shapes.
- Fern 3D Embossing Folder – Perfect for this resist technique with its detailed design.
If you’re interested in these, be sure to check out the availability as stock is limited and they will not return in the new catalogue.

Three Card Variations—Which One Is Your Favourite?
I demonstrated three card versions using the same background but different approaches for the sentiment layer:
1. Bold Green Layer – A punch of Granny Apple Green with tone-on-tone stamping.

2. Crisp White Circle – Clean and simple with stamped greenery for extra detail.

3.Soft Sponged Look – A sponged circle that blends subtly into the background.

Each gives a slightly different feel—whether you prefer bold, soft, or somewhere in between, this is a great way to personalise your cardmaking style while keeping the process quick and enjoyable.
Give It a Go!
If you haven’t tried the debossed ink resist background technique yet, I highly encourage you to have a go. All you need is an embossing folder, blending brushes, and a couple of coordinating ink colours. It’s a satisfying way to stretch your supplies and get a beautiful layered effect with minimal effort.
