Easy Watercolor Pencil Card Techniques for Stunning Results

By | 11 April 2025

If you’ve been wanting to try some watercolour pencil card techniques that are simple, budget-friendly, and easy to master, this week’s Facebook and YouTube Live is a great place to start!

We focused on using Watercolor Pencils—a fantastic, low-cost way to bring your images to life. You don’t need any fancy tools or even water. Just pencils, stamped images, and a few simple techniques can make a big difference.

How to Get Smooth, Clean Colour

One of the biggest tips I shared in the live was how you colour makes all the difference.

If you’ve ever ended up with streaky lines or scratchy-looking colour, here’s what to try instead:

Use small, light circular motions – Instead of back-and-forth colouring like you would with regular pencils, gently build up the colour using soft circles. This helps avoid harsh lines and gives a smoother, more even finish.

Start light and build up – Begin with a soft layer, and then go back over certain areas with a bit more pressure to deepen the colour and add dimension.

Mix colours for depth – I accidentally picked up Cajun Craze instead of Early Espresso for a tree branch—and it worked out beautifully! Layering the two gave it a more natural, warm tone.

Create soft shading – On one card, I lightly extended the blue of the bird’s body into the white belly area for a gentle gradient. You don’t need a blender pen or water to get that subtle blended look!

What We Made During the Live

We created two cards featuring the Winterly Tree Tops stamp set. One was a simple note card stamped and coloured with Watercolor Pencils, framed with a Balmy Blue layer to match the colouring.

The second card featured a fun twist—mirror stamping! This technique uses a silicone craft mat to flip your stamped image, so your bird can face the other direction. Perfect when you want symmetry or a little extra interest on your card.
