How to Use Patterned Paper to Create a Background for Handmade Cards

By | 1 March 2025

Using patterned paper to create a background is a fun and simple way to add colour and texture to your handmade cards. Whether you mix and match different paper scraps or stick to a coordinated design, this technique allows for endless creativity. I experimented with a few different colour combinations, and I love how each one gives the card a completely unique look!

Why Use Patterned Paper to Create a Background?

Using background patterned paper scraps is a great way to give your cards a unique and personalised look. Whether you mix and match different designs or stick to one pattern, this method makes every card special.

For this project, I used patterned paper to create a background, cutting it into six 2cm x 8cm strips and arranging them onto a cardstock panel. I love how this technique turns simple paper pieces into a beautifully layered design! I also added a piece of Basic White to frame it before adhering it to the card base.

Colour Combinations That Work Beautifully

One of the best things about this technique is its versatility. I experimented with different colour combinations, and these were my favourites:

Melon Mambo & Balmy Blue:
This card features a Melon Mambo card base with coordinating pink patterned paper. The soft floral background is complemented by a Balmy Blue butterfly, creating a striking contrast that makes the design pop.

Blackberry Bliss & Balmy Blue:
For a more elegant look, I used a Blackberry Bliss card base with a soft purple, watercolour-style patterned paper. The Balmy Blue butterfly, paired with a Basic Gray body, adds a delicate yet bold focal point.

Calypso Coral & Daffodil Delight:
This vibrant design features a Calypso Coral card base with Daffodil Delight patterned paper. The Calypso Coral butterfly blends seamlessly with the warm background, creating a cheerful and inviting feel.

The focal part of the card is a delicate die-cut butterfly from the Beautiful Butterflies die set. You could also use flowers, sentiments, or any embellishment that suits your style.

The die set is part of the Beautiful Butterflies bundle which includes stamps, dies and an hybrid embossing folder

Each card is finished with a simple ‘Thank You’ sentiment from the Simply Said stamp set, and delicate embellishments, adding the perfect final touch.
