Heat embossing was one of the very first techniques I learned when I started stamping over 20 years ago—and to this day, it remains one of my absolute favourites. There’s just something about watching that powder melt and transform into a raised, glossy design that still brings a bit of crafting joy every time!
In this week’s Facebook and YouTube live, I featured a card using the Beautiful Butterflies stamp set and demonstrated how to heat emboss step-by-step. If you’ve never tried it before, or it’s been a while since you last gave it a go, this video is for you.

Heat Embossing with Beautiful Butterflies
The combination of heat embossing and the Beautiful Butterflies stamp set creates such an elegant effect—especially when paired with soft colours like Balmy Blue and Fresh Freesia. I used white embossing powder to really make the butterfly image pop, and layered it over dry embossing for some extra texture.

Whether you’re brand new to embossing or just looking to refresh your memory, you’ll love the tips I share in the video. From which tools you actually need, to little tricks like how to avoid stray flecks of powder, it’s all covered in the live session.
Why Heat Embossing is Worth Trying
Heat embossing is a simple way to elevate your handmade cards without a lot of fuss.
The specific tools you need for heat embossing are:
- VersaMark Ink Pad
- Embossing Powder (white, black, clear, or metallics like gold and silver)
- Heat Tool
Optional tools like an embossing buddy, tray, and tweezers can make the process tidier and easier, but they aren’t essential to get started.
I also share a few little stories in the video, including how I used to emboss with an old toaster in the early days! (I wouldn’t recommend that method now, but we all start somewhere!)
Here are the supplies I used.
Watch the Full Cardmaking Process
In the video, I not only share how to emboss, but I also assemble a complete card with the butterfly as the focal point. I show you how I layered the embossed design, added a simple sentiment, and finished it off with a few embellishments.
No matter what stamp set you use, heat embossing is a fantastic technique to add to your cardmaking toolbox.
