Back to basics card making is sometimes exactly what we need. Whether you are just starting out or have been crafting for years, going back to simple supplies can be both refreshing and inspiring.
In this week’s Facebook and YouTube Live, I shared a range of easy cards using just a few core supplies. If you’ve ever wondered what you really need to get started, or how to create something meaningful without lots of tools, this is a great place to begin.

Back to Basics Card Making Supplies You Really Need
One of the things I love about this style of crafting is how simple it can be. You don’t need a full craft room to create something beautiful.
For these cards, I focused on a few essentials:
- A stamp set with sentiments and small images
- Ink pads (or Stampin’ Spots if you’re starting out)
- A clear block
- Basic white notecards or cardstock
- Adhesives like glue and Stampin’ Dimensionals
That’s it. From there, you can build as you go.
Simple Back to Basics Card Making Ideas
Here are some of the cards I shared during the live. You’ll see how effective simple stamping can be, especially when you play with colour combinations.

Some of these cards use just one colour for a clean, classic look, while others combine a couple of colours for a bit more interest. The cupcake, hearts, and flowers are all small images, but they create lovely backgrounds when repeated.
Adding a Little More with Blending
If you’re ready to step things up just a little, blending brushes are a lovely addition. They allow you to create soft backgrounds without needing patterned paper.
The first two in Granny Apple Green and Daffodil Delight are Note Cards.

Here are the some standard sized cards:

This is still very much back to basics card making, just with a little extra depth. A gentle blend of colour around the edges can really frame your stamping and make it stand out.
Why Going Back to Basics Works
Sometimes we can feel like we need all the latest tools or techniques, but simple card making has its own charm.
It’s:
- Quick when you need a last-minute card
- Perfect for beginners
- A great way to use what you already have
- Relaxing and enjoyable without overthinking
Even if you’re an experienced crafter, having a few go-to simple designs is always helpful.
